British Home Stores History.

British Home Stores first store opened back in 1928 in Brixton. In 1932 the company became a plc. In 1986 British Home Sores merged with habitat and Mothercare to form Storehouse plc. This led to the British Home Stores name being changed to BHS. In 2000 with the company trading Philip Green bought BHS from Storehouse for 200 million. He followed this up in 2002 by adding arcadia to the group which included retailers like Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Burton leading Phillip Green to be in charge of the second largest clothing retail group in the UK. The brands were expanded in 2005 with purchase of Tammy and Amelie May.

Sir Philip Green, the owner of Arcadia Group, has responded to a 40 per cent drop on the company's profits by announcing the closure of 250 stores. Arcadia, which owns Miss Selfridge, BHS, Burton and Evans as well as Top Shop, reported underlying pre-tax profits of £133.1million compared with £213.1million last year, as like-for-like sales including VAT fell 1.8 per cent. The 2,507 Arcadia shops include Bhs, Burton and Evans. The group is one of the biggest private employers in Britain, with over 44,000 staff. It also has 600 overseas franchised outlets in 36 countries.

For the year BHS made an operating loss of £56,330,000 as asgainst a profit of £15,203,000 the previous year. Turnover was £1,121.045,000. Staff numbers were  Full time 2,856 Part time 10, 923 Head office 702.
