Barnsley Building Society was originally founded as the Barnsley Permanent Benefit Building Society in
1853. On 22nd October 2008 Barnsley Building Society announced that it could lose as
much as £10 million through the collapse of the icelandic banks Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander and Heritable Bank and
that the board of Barnsley Building Society had approached Yorkshire Building Society to take them over. As of the 31/12/2008
Barnsley Building Society is part of the Yorkshire Building Society. Although the members of Barnsley Building Society did not vote on the deal or get a windfall Yorkshire Building Society
has said that should they recover any of the £10 million owed it may hand this money back to Barnsley members less expenses
and tax although this is not guaranteed. Head Office Barnsley Building Society Permanent Building Regent
