History and Profile of the Barnsley Building Society
Barnsley Building Society was originally founded as the Barnsley Permanent Benefit Building Society in 1853.
On 22nd October 2008 Barnsley Building Society announced that it could lose as much as £10 million through the collapse of the icelandic banks Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander and Heritable Bank and that the board of Barnsley Building Society had approached Yorkshire Building Society to take them over. As of the 31/12/2008 Barnsley Building Society is part of the Yorkshire Building Society.
Although the members of Barnsley Building Society did not vote on the deal or get a windfall Yorkshire Building Society has said that should they recover any of the £10 million owed it may hand this money back to Barnsley members less expenses and tax although this is not guaranteed.
