History.

Debenhams was started in 1778 under the name Flint & Clark. In 1813 William Debenham became a partner and the name became Clark & Debenham. Thename was changed again in 1851 to Debenham & Freebody when Clement Feebody became a partner. Finally in 1905 the name became just Debenhams.In 1985 the Company was acquired by the Burton group of companies before being demerged and listed on the LSE in 1998.In 2003 Debenhams  was bought again by a group of venture capatalists who they refloated the company on the LSE in 2006.

Results Year Ended 3rd September 2011.

Debenhams plc made a headline profit £166.1 million and gross transaction revenue was  £2,679.3 million.

At the end of the year they had 160 stores with 163 in the UK & Ireland and during the year they opened Bath in September 2010, Wakefield in May 2011 and Fareham in June 2011. One yew store will open in 2012 followed by Chesterfield in 2013, and nearly 30 more possible new Debenhams stores are under discussion.

Online Sales increased by 73.8% to £180.4 million with like for like sales increasing by 71.9%.

New ranges launched in the year included Edition, New range by Julien Macdonald, Diamond in womenswear and J J Jeans by Jasper Conran in menswear.

Half year results for 26 weeks ended 27/02/2010. 

Debenhams plc made a headline profit for the 26 weeks before exceptionals and tax of £123.6 million and statutory revenue was up 11.6% to £1,187.8 million.

The debenhams website saw sales growth of 85.9% with sales of £50.6 million and 1.5 million visitors a week being recorded. The launch of the collect in store service led to 22% of customers choosing this route to purchase.  

Market share gains were seen in menswear, childrenswear and home furnishings.

4 new stores were opened  giving Debenhams 151 department stores and 13 desire by debenhams stores plus the 56 international stores in 20 countries.

Debenhams also supply insurance products like wedding and home insurance.
