Tenerife Sur (South) airport (IATA: TFS, ICAO: GCTS), lies about 60 kilometres from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the town of Granadilla de Abona, in the south of the island, in the heart of the tourist area.  Tenerife South airport was opened on 06/11/1978 as a fog free airport a year after the Tenerife North Airport suffered the worst accident in aviation history then a KLM 747 and Pan Am 747 collided resulting in the deaths of 583 people. The airport was originally known as Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport. In 2010 7,359,150 passengers used the airport and there were 51,858 aircraft movements. The airport is owned by Aena whose fundamental aim has always been to constantly improve its infrastructures, mainly with the passenger in mind. To this end it has carried out an analysis of the preferences of airport users and has redesigned the whole boarding area, including the communal areas.
